Educational Series & Podcast – Big Oil meets its “Tabaco Moment”

Join us on Wednesday 2nd February at 12:30 to hear Dr. Blondeel a Research Fellow in the Strategy and International Business Group at the Warwick Business School (UK), talk about how Big Oil meets its “Tabaco Moment”.

A new style of activism, involving lawyers, shareholders and hedge funds is increasingly forced the global oil industry to confront climate change. In this presentation, we look at climate litigation and shareholder activism. These are two forms of activism that caught global headlines in 2021 with the surprise court ruling against Shell in the Netherlands and the shareholder revolt at ExxonMobil, leading to a major reshuffle of its board room. Where does this come from? What makes it more effective and threatening than more “conventional” climate advocacy? And, most importantly, what can oil companies do to stymie this rising tide of new climate activism?
